Pregnancy is a beautiful stage when a women feels the power of mother nature within, she is giving away all the nutrients from her body into making her baby's body and mind. This process takes a toll of mommy to be, her body undergoes physical and hormonal transformation. One of the many visible changes are in her feet and fingers, they retain more fluids.

What Causes Swelling in Feet and Fingers During Pregnancy?

  1. Increased blood volume: During pregnancy, the body produces more blood to support the growing fetus. This increased blood flow can cause fluid to build up in the extremities, leading to swelling.
  2. Hormonal changes: The hormone progesterone, which is produced in large quantities during pregnancy, can also contribute to edema by causing blood vessels to relax and become less efficient at returning blood to the heart. These hormonal swings are same which causes bloating during and before periods.
  3. Pressure on veins: As the uterus expands, it can put pressure on nearby veins, making them more prone to swelling.

  2. Exercise and Walking: Get moving, I had hyperemesis gravidarum during first four months of my pregnancy and lost weight but as seventh month began I swelled up, only thing to rescue was daily walking. Get a pair of comfortable shoes and walk.
  3. Elevate your feet: Elevating your feet above the level of your heart can help reduce fluid buildup in the extremities. A good maternity pillow can do good.
  4. Avoid standing for long periods: Taking regular breaks to rest and elevate your feet can help prevent excessive swelling.
  5. Wear comfortable shoes: Wearing supportive, comfortable shoes can help reduce pressure on your feet and promote better circulation. You can opt for orthopedic shoes.
  6. Compression Stockings: vastly used for varicose veins treatments, but can be used under doctor's consultation to relive swelling in legs.

While foot and finger swelling during pregnancy is generally harmless but if your swelling is severe or sudden and painfull, seek immediate medical attention. This could be a sign of a more serious condition like preeclampsia.
