On a recent visit to Taj Mahal Agra, I happened to buy wild rose ittar (attar or perfume oil). Initially I was apprehensive as it filled up my migraine prone head with its smell but upon using it off and on, I realised that it gives out a rich and earthy smell. That is something no amount of Burberry, Bulgari, Elizabeth Arden or even Victoria Secret's or Bath and Body Works body spray could give. So, what is special about ittar? Let’s figure it out!

What is ittar/attar/perfume Oil and How is it different from regular Perfumes?

These are derived from plant materials, such as flowers, leaves, roots, or resins, it inviolves a very long and laborious distillation process. It's an age-old process of distilling flowers, herbs, and spices into a carrier oil like sandalwood or jojoba. These oils are typically very concentrated, ranging from 15% to 70%+ fragrance oils. This high concentration results in excellent longevity, often lasting 6-24 hours or even longer depending on the quality. What is Eau de Toilette Perfume (ETD) and Eau de Parfum (ETP)?

ETDs are the most diluted of the perfumes available in the makerket and also the cheapest perfumes. The cost of same perfumes' EDP and ETD will vary a lot. Most famous perfume brands like Chanel, Dior, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Calvin Klein and Tom Ford all carry EDPs and ETDs. The reason for cost varioation is the concentration of frangrane oil and sillage over time. EDPs last longer than EDPs and are usually have more complex scents.
