Does my child really need HPV Vaccine?

Yes, every child be it a girl or a boy needs HPV vaccine. Unlike thought before that HPV Vaccine only prevents cervical cancer this vaccine helps prevents vaginal and vulvar cancers, penile cancer and anal or head and neck cancers. It is not just about STI and STDs, it is a prevention against lots of cancers. Indian Government is considering HPV Vaccine under the UIP.

What is HPV and HPV Vaccine?

HPV is a virus called Human papillomavirus that spreads through skin-to-skin contact, most often during sexual activity. There are over 100 types of HPV, and about 40 of these can infect the genital areas, mouth, and throat. There is a misconception about it as a sexual activity oriented vaccine, that is absolutely incorrect it is about protecting your child from several types of cancers most of which are caused by HPV strains.

Currently in India there are 3 types of HPV Vaccines available

1. Cervarix: Protects against HPV-16 and HPV-18.
2. Gardasil: Protects against HPV-6, HPV-11, HPV-16, and HPV-18.
3. Gardasil-9: Offers broader protection against additional HPV strains.

Who Should Get Vaccinated For HPV and When?

1. Recommended Age: The HPV vaccine is recommended for routine vaccination for both boys and girls ages 11 or 12. Vaccination can start as early as age 9.
2. Booster Dose : Teens and young adults who haven't been vaccinated can still benefit from the vaccine. The CDC recommends vaccination up to age 26.
3. Adults 27-45: Talk to your doctor. While the HPV vaccine is generally most effective when given before the onset of sexual activity, it may still be beneficial for some adults specially women as 90% of cervical cancer is caused due to HPV.

The current HPV immunization in India is focused on prevention of cervical cancer but on consultation with Doctor one can find out about the vaccine that covers a larger HPV strains.
